Richard Misrach - On the Beach

December 3, 2007

artwork_images_423842297_187659_richardm.jpg

I was lucky enough to view Richard Misrach’s exhibition On the Beach at Pace Wildenstein in 2004. It was a powerful show with gigantic prints. As many know, Misrach has published a gigantic book of the same work. I have yet to add this book to my collection but I do have space. Now that I am back in Missouri I have plenty of space! If anyone is interested in listening to Richard Misrach talk about On the Beach and previous work click here.

While supplies last

rmcginleyolympic1.jpg

Those who know me know that I have a respectable photography book collection. Because photo books can be so expensive, I can’t always afford to buy every book I fall in love with. Fortunately, I have made several valuable decisions including first editions of Todd Hido’s House Hunting, Alec Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi (signed), and Jason Fulford’s Sunbird. Sometimes I pass on a book and truly regret it. Ryan McGinley’s Olympic Swimmers is one recent example. Dashwood had one copy for $50, but it was a little too scuffed up for me. That was the last time I saw a copy of Olympic Swimmers available for a decent price. However, my luck changed last week when I ran across the box set for the amazing price of $15. AbeBooks has their copy listed at $157.78. I received my copy yesterday and the boxed set was perfect. If you have any interest in Ryan McGinleys Olympic Swimmers click here while supplie last (one copy per customer.) Check out their other books too. I also got a great deal on Misha de Ridder’s Wilderness. Buy, Buy Buy!

Larry Sultan - Look at this Photo

July 26, 2007

It’s hard to pick a favorite Larry Sultan photograph. If I were forced to make a choice I would have to select the one above. Everything about this image is perfect. I wish I could get my hands on Sultan’s book Pictures from Home. It surprises me that it has never been re-released. I also wish I would have purchased The Valley when I had the chance.

Paul Kranzler - Tom

June 20, 2007

krems2.jpg

I was happy to receive a copy of Paul Kranzler’s book TOM in the mail yesterday. This book is well crafted. The cover has the appearance of wood paneling, a favorable detail. TOM is printed in a small edition of 500 english / 500 german. Buy one while they are still available.

The purpose of the Aperture Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and, specifically, artists whom we feel we can help by bringing them to a wide audience. It is also a way for Aperture to discover work that we might not otherwise see by artists whose progress we would like to follow.

Taryn Simon

March 9, 2007

Nuclear Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility, Cherenkov Radiation
Hanford Site, U.S. Department of Energy
Southeastern Washington State

Submerged in a pool of water at Hanford Site are 1,936 stainless steel nuclear waste capsules containing cesium and strontium. Combined, they contain over 120 million curies of radioactivity. It is estimated to be the most curies under one roof in the United States. The blue glow is created by the Cherenkov Effect or Cherenkov radiation. The Cherenkov Effect describes the electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle, giving off energy, moves faster than light through a transparent medium. The temperatures of the capsules are as high as 330 degrees Fahrenheit. The pool of water serves as a shield against radiation; a human standing one foot from an unshielded capsule would receive a lethal dose of radiation in less than 10 seconds.

Taryn Simon’s An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar opened today at the Whitney. A very exciting show indeed. I walked through the exhibition in astonishment. Many of the images I had seen online but still felt surprised when viewing the prints. If you make it to the show check out the book found next to the exhibition entry. A few recent articles on Taryn can be found here and here.

Jason Falchook

March 4, 2007

falchook2.jpg

Jason Falchook is one of many exciting contributers to Garth Risk Hallberg’s project A Field Guide to the North American Family. In his stimulating series “Contours and Detours”, Jason questions “our connection to the spaces we develop and inhabit.” Jason Falchook has a show opening March 9th at Civilian Art Projects in Washington, DC.

Humble Arts Foundation

February 20, 2007

humble.jpg

March has brought a few changes and a few exciting additions to the Humble Arts Foundation. As you will see they have reshaped their web format. Now you will find all their projects and events on one site. They have also introduced Solo Show. This is their best announcement yet. Each month Humble presents a collection of images plus an interview from a photographer previously featured in Group Show. The March Solo Show belongs to Rachelle Mozman who “examines the lives of young children living in isolated “exurban” development communities in New Jersey and Panama.”
Humble Arts has also announced their first group exhibition in Chelsea at New Century Artist. This will be their second physical exhibition in just a few months. As you can see the curators at Humble are very serious about finding and promoting emerging photographers.

Misty Keasler

February 6, 2007

keasler.jpg

Last week I stopped by Jenkins Johnson Gallery to view Misty Keasler’s new work Love Hotels. Shot in Japanese pay-by-the-hour hotels, Misty provides views within these fantasy rooms. The interiors are colorful, playful, and mildly cartoonish. At times its hard to believe that you are not viewing some child’s playroom. “Love Hotels” is up through March 3rd. The book can be purchased here.

Another image from the Zoo Project. Check out Garry Winogrand’s work from the Bronz Zoo in his first book “The Animals.”

Juliana Beasley

January 8, 2007

julianabeasley.jpg

Juliana Beasley has received much deserved attention recently. Last fall she was a “Hot Shot” at Jen Bekman and in October Joerg Colberg interviewed Juliana on his blog Conscientious. You can also find an interview posted by Jen Bekman here. This Friday, January 12, Juliana has a show at the 3rd Ward Gallery between 6-9pm. If you can make it to the show bring your copy of “Lapdancer” for Juliana to sign.

Rinko Kawauchi

December 26, 2006

rinko.jpg

I recently ran across Rinko Kawauchi’s work while visiting Dashwood Books. In 2001 Rinko released a series of three books - “Utatane” (catnap), “Hanabi” (fireworks) and “Hanako“, creating an overnight sensation in the Japanese photography world. Rinko has continued to publish with great success, becoming one of Japan’s most popular female photographers.

Kawauchi’s themes of family, human interaction with nature and the cycle of life are photographed in pastel colors. Her work reveals exquisite delicacy, achieved through sensate compositions, a careful attention to texture and the cultivation of a beautifully clear, clean, often whitish light.

rinko3.jpg

When I look at Rinko’s work I often see a mix of Wolfgang Tillmans and Jason Fulford. Like Fulford, Rinko has a background in graphic design. Both also find the sequencing of images as important as the making of them.

‘For a photographer, it’s a necessity that you can shoot stuff magically. Accidents are necessary, but after I take a photograph, it is not all done. I continue to work on it.’ She suggests that the editing and presentation of the work is as important to the final image as composing and taking the photograph itself.

Pingmag has a revealing interview with Rinko here.

Jessica Backhaus - Jesus and the Cherries

December 19, 2006

backhaus.jpg

One of my favorite books of 2006 is Jessica Backhaus’s Jesus and the Cherries. The book is an accumulation of images shot between 2001-2004 in the small village of Netno, Poland. Much of the beauty in this book comes from the terrific pairing of still-lifes with portraiture. Jessica Backhaus is represented by Yancey Richardson.

Barry Stone

December 18, 2006

Check out the work of Barry Stone. I am attracted to the combination of playfulness and intimacy in his work. Barry is a participating artist in the J&L project “Paper Placemats.”
