Jaimie Warren’s book Don’t You Feel Better, published by Aperture in 2008, puts a huge smile on my face. It’s hard not to grin with such titles as Nose Lick, Percy’s Butt, and The Finger. Jaimie is also the creator/curator of the curious performance based program Whoop Dee Doo, a live show featuring an assortment of dancers, musicans, and performance artist. As a Kansas City based artist, Jaimie was selected as a 2009 Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Awards Fellow. Make yourself feel better and watch the videos below from previous Whoop Dee Doo shows. Wild!
Lay Flat 01

I received my copy of Lay Flat 01 in the mail yesterday and can say that it was well worth the wait. I enjoy a good essay about photography as much as I enjoy a good photograph, and this has both. If you are not familiar with the project/publication take the time to check it out, and don’t forget to order a copy for your collection.
Deanna Dikeman

I know, it has been months. It’s not that I haven’t shot any new work, I have. I am very excited about this work and hope to share it when further along. I need to collect more visual evidence before I announce it to the world. I will however post other images not related to “the project”. When this series of work is finished I will also give it a proper title.
I thought this would be a great time to feature other photographers working in or around Kansas City. The images above come from Deanna Dikeman’s project Relative Moments. Deanna has been shooting images of her parents and extended family since 1986. A truly wonderful series of midwestern family moments. Deanna is a recent recipient of the United States Artist Fellowship.

Columbus Park
September 27, 2008 by KevinTiffany and I recently moved to Columbus Park, a historic neighborhood in Kansas City just east of the River Market. The area is one of the most diverse sections of Kansas City and feels a bit like Brooklyn. I’ve been spending much of my time recently riding my bike around Columbus Park, meeting our neighbors, and taking photographs.

Last weekend I had the chance to attend a horror convention in Lexington, Kentucky with my pal and noted horror photographer Joshua Hoffine. I have to admit that I’m not a huge horror film fan (love Shaun of the Dead), but I can now safely say that I am a huge horror convention fan! Josh set up a booth with images from his series ‘ After Dark My Sweet’. This was his first convention and he was an absolute hit. Victor Miller, writer of Friday the 13th, was our first and most enthusiastic customer. Fortunately, I had the chance to slip away and shoot a few portraits of the convention patrons. I hope to travel with Josh to the next convention, and if I do you can bet that I will have my camera in hand! Read more about our trip on Josh’s blog.

Say hello to William and Greg. I met them both yesterday while roaming the KC streets. It’s such a thrill to ask a stranger for a portrait. I’m always excited when they say yes. Thank you for your time and friendliness William and Greg!

I ran across Dave Jordano’s work last week while viewing the book set 6×6 published by the Society of Photographers. Dave has several amazing projects shot in and around Chicago. The image above is from the project Simple Faith.
