Library of Congress meets Flickr

In the last year The Library of Congress has published much of their photography collection online. You can spend days looking through the images, and if you wish to make a print they offer high resolution files. The Library of Congress has now gone a step further by posting two of their most popular archives on Flickr. The links to both are listed below.

FSA/OWI Color Collection

These vivid color photos from the Great Depression and World War II capture an era generally seen only in black-and-white. Photographers working for the United States Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI) created the images between 1939 and 1944.

News in the 1910s

This selected set of 1,500 photographs is from a large collection of almost 40,000 glass negatives. The entire collection spans 1900-1920 and richly documents sports events, theater, celebrities, crime, strikes, disasters, and political activities, with a special emphasis on life in New York City.

Richard Misrach - On the Beach

December 3, 2007 by Kevin

I was lucky enough to view Richard Misrach’s exhibition On the Beach at Pace Wildenstein in 2004. It was a powerful show with gigantic prints. As many know, Misrach has published a gigantic book of the same work. I have yet to add this book to my collection but I do have space. Now that I am back in Missouri I have plenty of space! If anyone is interested in listening to Richard Misrach talk about On the Beach and previous work click here.

Gus Powell - Look at this Photo

October 3, 2007 by Kevin

When I receive the New Yorker I flip to view the Cartoon Caption Contest, then quickly flip to the Goings on About Town. Fifty percent of the time Gus Powell has an image published on this page. His images are always a highlight. It’s hard to say that I have a favorite Powell image, but the one above always absorbs my interest. I love mystery in an image and this particular photograph is full of it.

From Missouri looking East

September 27, 2007 by Kevin

Forgive my absence in the last few weeks. I have finally settled down from my cross country move. For those that don’t know, I moved to Kansas City from New York City in early September. I am very excited to return to the Midwest. New York was stimulating and I learned much, but Kansas City is my home. Now that I have made myself comfortable, I will be posting on a regular schedule.

Soth at a Dive Bar

August 18, 2007 by Kevin

soth.jpg

I found this 2003 article about Alec Soth and his process very interesting. The reporter follows Soth to a local bar were Alec picks out a subject.

“What’s your story?” Alec asks John as soon as we order drinks. And so John tells his story. He’s a builder, off early for the day from a job. He has a cabin he’s building in the north woods and someday he plans to retire there. “I want to get up there and replant a lot of the trees,” he says.
“That’s a real good story,” says Soth. “Can I tell you my story? I’m a photographer…I’m drawn to dreamer types–people who dream big. Something told me you were a dreamer.”
Soth asks if he can take John’s picture. Finding out John lives nearby, he further asks: “Can we go to your house?…I’ll buy you another one of these.”

The complete article can be found here.
